Baba Chan's husband (Harukichi Abe) was from Niigata, Japan, located in the mountains on the main island of Honshu. Baba Chan went back with him there after they were married in Hawaii (Baba Chan was 17 yrs. old), and stayed with Ji Chan's family for 18 months. It was so cold that Baba Chan remembers wearing 13 kimonos. It also got so deep with snow that the paths through the snow were like walking between 2 walls higher than your head!
In Niigata they speak a dialect of Japanese which Baba Chan learned from her Mother-in-Law. She still speaks the dialect with a woman at the Senior Citizen's Club. Other members of the senior's club that come from Japan cannot understand what they are saying.

{GIGGLE} That sounds like some of Dad's German friends. When they realized he could understand them when they spoke standard German, they switched to Berliner Dialect. Dad couldn't understand that. {SMILE}
